I reckon most of us insure our 4WDs the same way we buy toothpaste.
We stand in the aisle, stare blankly at twenty different options that all look vaguely the same, pick one somewhere in the middle and convince ourselves we made an informed decision.
Then we don't think about it again, until it’s time to renew.
Which is fair enough, because insurance is about as exciting as reading the instructions on a fire extinguisher. The trouble is, they're both things you suddenly become very interested in once something's gone horribly wrong.
The biggest mistake people make isn't buying bad insurance.
It's renewing the same policy year after year without ever asking whether it still suits the way they travel or what new mods are on the rig and might not be covered without a policy update.
Because chances are, your 4X4 has changed.
Your touring has changed. Your gear has changed. Your expectations have changed.
But has your insurance?
That's the question.
Actually... that's the first question.

Has Your Insurance Kept Up With Your Four-Wheel Drive?
Let's say you bought your 4X4 two years ago.
It was stock as a rock. Maybe you threw a swag in the back and headed off for the occasional long weekend.
Fast forward to today and it's probably a very different story.
There's a bullbar out front. Suspension underneath it. Bigger tyres. Maybe a winch you've convinced yourself you'll definitely need one day. There's a canopy, drawers, a dual battery, lithium, solar, a fridge full of food and enough recovery gear to rescue half the convoy.
The funny thing is, while your 4WD has evolved over the years, plenty of people never stop to ask whether their insurance has evolved with it.

If I get Stuck… What Actually Happens?
Not, "Am I covered?" That's too easy. What actually happens?
Who do I call? Who organises the recovery? How far will they recover the vehicle?
Do I organise everything myself and hope someone reimburses me later?
If I'm halfway across the Simpson, the High Country or somewhere in the Kimberley where the nearest recovery truck is measured in days rather than kilometres, what does recovery actually look like?
Because "covered for recovery" can mean very different things depending on who's saying it.
Some policies are written around everyday motoring. Others are built around the reality that four-wheel drives don't spend all their lives parked outside Woolies.
That's a very important distinction.
Before renewing your 4WD insurance, ask whether your modifications are covered, how recoveries are handled, whether water crossings are insured, if labour costs are included for damaged accessories, and how repairs are managed after a claim. Your policy should reflect how your vehicle is currently built and used, not how it looked when you first purchased it.
Have I Actually Told Them What's Bolted onto it?
Here's a fun little exercise. Walk around your vehicle. Every time you point at something that wasn't on it the day it rolled out of the showroom, count it.
Bullbar. Winch. Suspension. Tyres. Lights. Roof rack. Awning. Drawers. Compressor. Long-range tank. Canopy. Dual batteries. Solar. Fridge. UHF.
Now ask yourself… Does my insurer actually know it's all there?
More importantly... if something happened tomorrow, would they actually be insured for what they're worth?

Are the Labour Costs Covered as Part of the Policy?
Here's one almost nobody asks.
Let's say you're involved in an insured accident. Your suspension's damaged. The bullbar's bent. Maybe the canopy or long-range tank needs replacing. Most people immediately think about the cost of the parts.
New bullbar. New suspension. New canopy. Whatever's been damaged.
But that's only half the bill.
Because before those parts can be replaced, someone has to remove everything that's already there. Then fit it all again afterwards.
Anyone who's ever installed a dual battery system, canopy or long-range tank knows the labour involved can quickly climb into the thousands.
So here's the question worth asking before you renew:
If my modifications are damaged in an insured event, does my policy also cover the labour to refit them?
It's the sort of detail that's easy to overlook because you hope you'll never need it.
But if you've invested thousands of dollars building your touring rig, it's one of those questions that can make a very expensive difference when something eventually goes wrong.
Does my Insurer Actually Understand Four-Wheel Driving?
This is probably the biggest question of all, I reckon. Some companies insure 4X4s.
Others understand four-wheel driving. There's a difference.
One sees a modified vehicle. The other sees years of weekends, overtime and dreaming bolted together. One sees a caravan. The other understands that caravan might spend more time on corrugations than bitumen. One sees a recovery claim. The other understands why recoveries sometimes happen a very long way from the nearest town. It sounds subtle.
Until you actually need them.
If these days you're towing a caravan around Australia, crossing deserts, driving beaches. Heading into remote national parks. Carrying serious gear, recovery equipment and enough food to disappear for weeks. Your insurance should keep up.
At the end of the day, insuring a commuter with a bullbar isn't quite the same thing as insuring a touring rig that's built specifically to get you to the places Google Maps gives up on.

Am I Covered for Water Crossings?
Here's one that'll separate the policies designed for everyday drivers from the ones that understand wheelers.
Water crossings aren't some obscure edge case. They're part of touring Australia. Whether it's Cape York, the High Country or a creek crossing on your favourite weekend track, sooner or later, most of us are going to find ourselves staring at water.
So before you renew, ask a simple question:
If a water crossing goes wrong, am I actually covered?
Not every policy treats water crossings the same. Some have specific conditions and others may have exclusions that only become obvious when you read the fine print.
It's worth knowing exactly where your policy stands before you're standing knee-deep in a creek wondering whether the only thing you've drowned is your engine... or your wallet.
If your insurer can't give you a clear answer, keep asking questions until they can.
Because confidence at the water's edge starts long before you lock the hubs.
Who Decides how my Vehicle gets Repaired?
After an accident, most of us just want our pride and joy back the way it was, makes sense right? We built it to our standards and specs, and if it has to be repaired we want it done properly.
Which raises another question. Who actually decides where it goes? Who repairs it?
Do they understand modified 4X4s? Or is it simply another vehicle rolling through the workshop?
If you've spent years building something exactly the way you wanted it, it's worth understanding how that process works before you ever need it.
Finally…
Forget the premium for a minute. Seriously.
Imagine every insurance policy in Australia cost exactly the same tomorrow morning.
Which one would you choose? Because if your answer changes the moment price disappears from the equation… Maybe price was never the right thing to compare in the first place.
The truth is, most of us spend months researching the vehicle. Weeks choosing accessories. Hours debating tyres, suspension and whether we really need a winch.
Then we protect all of it by spending fifteen minutes comparing premiums. It doesn't make much sense when you say it out loud.
Insurance isn't just about replacing what's broken.
It's about understanding how you use your 4X4, where you take it, what you've built, and what's going to happen if a bad day arrives.
So before you hit 'Renew', don't just ask what it costs. Ask what it covers. Ask what it doesn't. Ask the awkward questions.
Because when you're 800 kilometres from home, the sun's disappearing behind the horizon and something expensive has just made a noise it definitely wasn't designed to make...
...you won't remember what you paid.
You'll remember what your policy did.
