The all-new Nissan Navara Pro PHEV

Nissan have confirmed their new Navara Pro plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is arriving in Australia in 2027, making us the first right-hand-drive market to receive the new model (oh, and NZ).

Unlike some international markets, which received a smaller 1.5-litre turbo-petrol hybrid system, the Australian-bound Navara Pro PHEV has been developed around a larger 2.0-litre setup following extensive local testing.

This Oceania Spec will use a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine paired with an electric motor integrated into an eight-speed automatic transmission. This spits out a preliminary 300kW of power and 800Nm of torque.

These numbers align with the terrain we tackle and work we undertake with our 4WDs in Aus. The original specs were rejected following local testing starting in 2025, which showed it couldn't handle demands like severe off-roading, steep grades, and heavy trailer towing.

The Navara Pro PHEV will have four selectable drive modes programmed in, including ECO, Standard, Sport and Slippery. Combined with its low-range crawling capability, seven terrain modes are loaded up, including Standard, Deep Snow, Mud, Sand, Rock, Wading and Expert. This maintains the Navara's history in Australia as a versatile and capable off-roader. Each mode adjusts the vehicle's powertrain, steering and traction-control mapping, ensuring performance remains optimised both on-road and off-road.

Other preliminary specs show this ute is ready for Australia, like the 1,000kg of payload and 3,500kg braked towing capacity. We won't know more about the battery and EV-only range until closer to release, but the BYD Shark may soon have company circling these waters.

Expert Advice

Is Touring Getting Too Expensive?

Fuel prices hurt, caravan parks aren't cheap and somehow a roadhouse lunch now needs its own budget. But is touring Australia really becoming unaffordable, or have we convinced ourselves we need more gear than ever before? Josh takes a look at the real cost of hitting the road.

Electric Brake Controllers Explained: Proportional vs Time-Based and How to Choose

Your caravan's brakes do nothing until the tow vehicle tells them to. Here's how an electric brake controller works, why proportional beats time-based, how to set the gain so the trailer stops with you rather than into you, and the check to do before every trip.
