I had a stone crack my windscreen up near Birdsville last year on our way to cross the Simpson desert, Club 4×4 organised everything for the replacement screen.

On my trip across the Simpson I was accompanied by an Amarok on our way to Birdsville, he had clutch problems. But prior to this I had spoke to him about Club 4×4 and all the extras including extra cover for remote recovery and he informed me he only had normal insurance and NRMA road side assist. As the Big Red Bash was in Birdsville at the time of our crossing, the mechanics were too busy to have a look that day so he decided to go anyway only to completely blow the clutch 200 km’s in – about the middle of the French line.

He had to wait 3 days before a tow truck from Mt Dare could get him at his own expense back to Mt Dare, then the NRMA covered the cost to Alice Springs. He ended up out of pocket a couple of thousand dollars for the recovery to Mt Dare.

Best LandCruiser Engine in 2026: Which One is Right for You?

The LandCruiser name has been earned the hard way, forged across Australia’s harshest tracks and most remote country. While the badge gets the recognition, it’s the engines that built the legacy. The best choice comes down to how you use your 4WD, whether that’s crossing the Simpson, towing a van up the coast, or running a reliable daily that’s ready for the weekend.

This guide runs through the 4x4 upgrades that genuinely changed how we travel, from suspension and GVM to recovery gear, storage, power and the little bits of kit you only fully appreciate when things go sideways.
