Let’s get rid of the grey area and talk about what modifications and personal effects mean in a Club 4X4 comprehensive insurance policy.

When considering insurance for your 4X4, you may be wondering whether all the modifications, accessories and gear your vehicle carries is insured and valued appropriately should something go wrong, wherever your adventures may take you.

At Club 4X4 Insurance, we’re passionate outdoor enthusiasts who understand how quickly things can add up when building your dream car. This is why our 4X4 insurance policies include personal effects cover for portable gear, and cover for modifications and accessories permanently fixed to a 4WD..

Put simply, when you insure your vehicle with Club 4X4, you can have a separate value listed for your modifications and accessories in addition to your vehicle’s base value, plus cover for your portable gear. This means you can insure your 4WD, Caravan or Camper Trailer for a value that better reflects what you’ve put into it with peace of mind that in the event of a total loss, you can replace it with something similar rather than settling for less.

But what is the difference between modifications, accessories & gear?

Modifications or ‘mods’ and accessories are aftermarket items that are permanently fixed to your vehicle i.e., bolted or welded to the vehicle.

Gear refers to portable items that are carried, worn, or used whilst touring, which is where our personal effects cover comes in.

Below is a list of items split into these two categories that is by no means exhaustive but intends to give a basic understanding of how we can cover touring setups.

Modifications & Accessories

  • Winches
  • Snorkels
  • Towbars
  • Roof Racks or Platforms
  • Aftermarket Suspension
  • Light Bars/Spotlights
  • Fixed Fuel or Water Tanks
  • Fridge Slides

Personal Effects

  • GPSs, EPIRBs or Sat Phones
  • Camp Stoves & Ovens

Amounts and Limits

There is no pre-set amount or limit for modifications and accessories cover with Club 4X4 Insurance; rather the amount should reflect the reasonable costs for you to repair or replace the modifications and/or accessories lost or damaged as a result of an insured event. The sum insured can include labour and installation costs as well, so it’s a good idea to tally up the costs involved in building your vehicle to have handy while completing a quote. If you are insured with Club 4X4 already, don’t forget to update your policy when your new goodies go on!

Our Australia-wide personal effects cover works slightly differently. It has a standard cover amount of $2,000 with the ability to upgrade to $5,000 or $10,000, and individual items over $1,000 can be specifically listed to ensure they’re accurately covered. This is an additional benefit that applies to personal items that are meant to be carried, worn or used whilst touring in your vehicle. It covers both accidental loss or damage to personal effects belonging to you, anywhere in Australia, with or away from your vehicle.
