Club 4X4 Gear Review – Bahco 106 piece Toolkit

If you’re like me, you like to be prepared for whatever comes your way.  And as a 4WDer, that means having tools and equipment onboard.  One of the first things I put into the car was an Ozcharge Rescuemate capacitor based Jumpstarter, because I learned the hard way once that having a flat battery in the middle of nowhere isn’t fun (see Ozcharge Rescuemate review here, and get 20% off RRP in our Safety Shop as a policyholder ). Personally for me, being prepared is as much about being able to take care of myself as it is about being able to lend a hand to someone else in need.

Today, I want to share my thoughts on a great piece of kit that has really simplified the tools I carry – the Bahco 106 piece tool kit – something I’ve had for over 6 months now.

Prior to getting this, I had a large screwdriver set, a large socket set, spanners, shifters, and all manner of other things that I collected in the back of the car.  I stored them in an Expedition 134 box (another great piece of equipment) because I didn’t want to put drawers in the back of the Everest because of the weight and space they take up.

Things to love about it

I really didn’t expect the Bahco Toolkit to be so useful, but I reckon I use it at least once a week, if not more.  The things I love about it are:

  • Rugged case – this is awesome – it protects all of the tools, and it is really rugged and looks as good as the day I got it, despite probably 10,000 km off-road in the back of the Everest.
  • It has simplified things – one kit for 90% of things I need rather than 3 or 4 different containers for sockets, screwdrivers, spanners, etc)
  • All the bits – this kit has screwdriver bits, hex bits, torx, and more.
The kit has a good range of philips head and flat head screwdrivers, torx bits, hex bits, and more, as well as some longer metric bits, and a range of handy extensions.
  • Two sizes of sockets – this makes it super practical for small and bigger jobs
It has 1/4″ and 1/2″ size sockets and ratchets, which is very handy, and even impact sockets.
  • The quality – I think you can really tell the quality of a ratchet by the sound and feel of the mechanism, and the Bahco kit is amazingly smooth and precise.
  • Full size spanners too – for those jobs where a socket just won’t cut it
You get a set of open end and ring spanners too, as well as a set of flex head spanners

I find I use it for everything around the 4X4 and now even the house.  It comes out to help adjust our RhinoRack Pioneer Platform accessories, when I add new stuff to the car, assembling or working in the garden, servicing the car, working on the Tvan and much more.

So easy to use, and its got pretty much everything you need.

I’ve used it to add our Driving lights, tighten the Bullbar, wire up accessories, and more.

Drawbacks

The drawbacks for me are really very minor.  I’ve found that:

  • The screwdriver bits can be too wide to fit into very narrow and deep spaces because of the width of the socket they attach to.  This has only been an issue once, but if you have any really narrow spaces you need to get a screwdriver on your 4X4, you’d probably need to carry a traditional screwdriver or two still.
  • The kit rattles when off-road – while everything has a perfect spot and fits pretty snugly, I find that when I’m proper off-road and the vehicle is bouncing around (not a corrugated road, more worn out tracks with decent holes), I can hear the sockets rattle around here and there.  Nothing a small cloth in the case wouldn’t fix, (and it clearly hasn’t annoyed me enough to do anything about it).

All in all, this kit has about 90% of the things I could ever need in a nice neat, and quality package.  If you have been on the lookout for something to rationalise all the bits and pieces you carry in the back of your rig, I can very much recommend this kit.

  1. I have had this kit, slightly older version for the last 4 years or so. In the back of the 4wd, camper box, caravan, on the boat etc. awesome kit……. only thing I have lost is the damn 10mm small socket!

  2. I have a very similar Bahco kit to this one that I bought a few years back to keep only for travelling, after getting fed up with always needing to unpack our travel kit to use whilst at home. Probably one of the best tool purchases I have made. The quality & design is good – tools that I trust not to let me down when most in need a long way from anywhere. And when on the road where the loss of a tool carries far greater consequences than losing one at home, the case where there is a place for everything makes it very easy to notice when something is missing. More than once the case ‘organiser’ has saved my bacon. I am very happy to add my recommendation based upon long term ‘on the road’ use. Another Bahco product I find good (& weight/space saving) is a 4 piece ratchet ring spanner set. Each double ended spanner has 4 different sizes on it, making the 4 spanner set the equivalent to a 16 spanner set!

  3. I have the same kit. Sits full time in my rig. The only thing I add is a bag of screw drivers (I prefer ones without bits) and assorted plyers. Love that its 1/4″ and 1/2″ and metric only. Does everything I need and is not overkill.
