Toyota LandCruiser 4X4 by Lake MacDonnell in SA

Lake MacDonnell, SA

Australia is home to several famous pink lakes, but Lake MacDonnell might be the most visually striking.

Located near the coastal town of Penong, the lake is famous for Watermelon Avenue, a road that cuts straight through the middle. On one side lies a vibrant bubble-gum pink lagoon, while the other side appears deep green or blue, creating an incredible colour contrast.

The pink hue comes from salt-loving algae and microorganisms that thrive in the highly saline water.

  • Googs Track – A remote dune track crossing the Yellabinna wilderness.
  • Fowlers Bay Coastal Tracks – Beach and dune driving along the far west coast.

Lake Hillier, WA

On the edge of Middle Island, Lake Hillier is one of Australia’s most famous pink lakes.

Separated from the deep blue waters of the Southern Ocean by a narrow strip of sand and coastal vegetation, the lake appears bubblegum pink when viewed from above. The colour comes from microorganisms and salt-loving algae that thrive in the lake’s highly saline water.

While the lake itself is located on a remote island off the coast of Esperance, scenic flights and boat tours allow visitors to see the surreal pink waters contrasted against the surrounding ocean.

Hutt Lagoon, WA

Just outside the fishing town of Port Gregory, Hutt Lagoon is our third and final of Australia’s striking pink lakes to make this list.

The lake’s colour is created by carotenoid-producing algae that thrive in the salty water, and the colours they product can range from pale pastel pink to vibrant magenta depending on the season, light conditions and salt concentration. Every visit is a new shade and a new backdrop for amazing photoshoots.

A road runs alongside the lagoon, allowing travellers to see the lake’s vivid colours from several viewpoints and making it a popular photo stop for those exploring Western Australia’s Coral Coast.

  • Kalbarri Coastal Cliffs Drive – A rugged coastal drive through dramatic red cliffs.

Giant Pink Slugs of Mount Kaputar, NSW

High in the forests of Mount Kaputar National Park in northern NSW, one of Australia’s strangest, slimiest creatures quietly goes about its business.

The Mount Kaputar pink slug is a bright bubblegum-pink slug that can grow up to 20 centimetres long. Found nowhere else in the world, the species survives in a small pocket of cool, moist forest high on the mountain.

To spot one of these fluorescent fellas, getting up on a cool misty morning when they descend to hide among the leaf litter of the forest floor is your best bet. If it’s rained recently, your odds increase tenfold.

Nearby 4WD Tracks

  • Mount Kaputar Summit Road – A winding mountain road leading to lookouts across the national park.
  • Sawn Rocks Access Track – Gravel access road to the famous basalt rock formations.

Camping

The Grampians Pink Common Heath, VIC

Each spring, parts of the Grampians are enveloped in a pink sea as the Common Heath comes into bloom.

This delicate native wildflower, which is also Victoria’s floral emblem, produces clusters of small bell-shaped flowers that carpet sections of heathland and forest. When in full bloom, the plants add soft pink tones to the rugged sandstone ranges and eucalyptus forests of the national park.
