Bombo Headland, Kiama, NSW

Kalkajaka National Park, QLD

Better known as the Black Mountain, Kalkajaka is one of Australia’s strangest landscapes. Massive black granite boulders are piled high across the hillside like a giant rock avalanche frozen in time. The name “Kalkajaka” means “place of many spears” in the local Guugu Yimithirr language, and the mountain has long been associated with Indigenous stories and mysteries.

The boulder field absorbs heat during the day and releases it slowly at night, creating its own microclimate and an eerie atmosphere.

Bombo Headland, NSW

Australia’s landscape has shifted dramatically over millions of years. Inland seas, volcanic eruptions and tectonic forces have all left their mark, and Bombo Headland is one of the most striking remnants of that ancient past.

Formed over 270 million years ago, these towering basalt columns were created by cooling lava flows. Over time, relentless ocean swell has carved them into the geometric formations you see today, creating a rugged, almost otherworldly coastline.

Just south of Sydney in Kiama, this is an easy stop that feels anything but ordinary.

For over a century, miners have worked this harsh landscape, uncovering gemstones that flash with deep blues, greens and purples. But it’s not just about the opals, as the town itself is an experience, with artesian bore baths, underground homes and classic outback pubs.

It’s a destination where the landscape, lifestyle and legend all collide.

  • Grawin, Glengarry & Sheepyard opal fields – Rough outback tracks

Guide Falls, TAS

Tucked into Tasmania’s lush northwest, Guide Falls is an easy-access waterfall that punches well above its weight.

Cascading over dark basalt rock and framed by dense greenery, it’s a classic Tassie scene. A short walk from the car park makes it one of the most accessible stops in the region and perfect for breaking up the drive to Cradle Mountain.

Nearby 4WD Tracks

  • Dial Range tracks – a number of forest trails with varying difficulty
  • Upper Natone forestry tracks – Quiet, scenic bush driving

Camping

Chillagoe-Mungana Caves National Park, QLD

Chillagoe-Mungana Caves National Park is known for its spectacular collection of limestone caves, Aboriginal rock art and mining sites, which all come together to create one of Australia’s most unique and underrated national parks.

Once a shallow sea, mud and coral reef sediment was deposited and formed limestone caves and other formations like Balance Rock. While limestone is typically white, these ancient creations were subjected to metamorphic heat and geological folding, which recrystallized the stone and trapped organic matter and oil-based impurities within, turning the surface into marble and giving it its blue, grey and black colouration.

Exploring these caves either with a guide or in one of the three self-guided caves is well worth your time and nearby Bogey Hole is the perfect spot to cool down post-spelunking.

Nearby 4WD Tracks

  • Maytown Track - Old gold mining ruins, remote Cape York-style country and river crossings are some of the sights on this roughly 200km track.
  • Ootan Road / Savannah Way Alternate Route - Wide open cattle country, isolation and classic Gulf Savannah scenery.
