You’ve just rolled off the barge, sun-kissed and salt-soaked after an epic off-grid beach escape. The tyres are sandy, your soul is full, and the esky’s down to dregs and crumbs - but before you flick it into the too-hard basket and call it a day, your rig and gear are begging for some well-earned TLC.
Beach driving and coastal camping bring a special kind of magic… and a special kind of mess. Salt, sand, moisture, and mud can wreak havoc on everything from your underbody to your camp chairs if you don’t give things a proper clean-up and check-over post-trip. So let’s run through the essential maintenance steps to protect your setup - and your investment - after a sand-blasting adventure like our recent K’gari Clean Up trip.

1. First Stop: The Underbody Day Spa
If you’ve driven on the beach, you’ve driven through salt. And salt is no mate to metal. It’s corrosive, sneaky, and has a nasty habit of settling into every nook and cranny underneath your vehicle.
Here’s how to give your underbody a deep cleanse:
- Find a good wash bay – Preferably one that’s dedicated to 4WDs and offers an underbody pressure wash.
- Use fresh water only – A hose with decent pressure will do if a wash bay isn’t nearby.
- Focus on suspension, diff housings, bash plates, and tow gear – These spots are salt magnets.
- For extra protection – Use a chassis cleaner like Salt Shift’s Chassis Flush, designed to neutralise salt and prevent long-term corrosion. It’s purpose-built for beach adventurers and well worth keeping in your kit.
Top Tip: If you’ve got a compressor or air gun, use it after rinsing to blow water out of tight spots and prevent corrosion.

2. Clean Your Recovery Gear Like It Saved Your Life (Because It Might’ve)
Whether you used your Maxtrax or they stayed snug on the roof rack, give them the respect they deserve.
- Rinse and dry recovery boards, snatch straps, shackles, dampeners, and winch ropes.
- Inspect for damage – Fraying, warping, or stress marks could mean it’s time to replace.
- Lubricate any moving parts like winch components or trailer couplings after rinsing to prevent rust.
3. Tyre Talk: Pressures, Punctures & Pebbles
After beach driving, it’s easy to forget your tyres were working double time.
- Reinflate to your standard highway pressures before you hit the bitumen.
- Inspect tread for embedded rocks or shells.
- Check sidewalls for any nicks or slices from rough terrain or oyster-covered crossings.
- Rotate tyres if your trip involved lots of low-pressure or heavy towing - you’ll thank yourself later.
4. The Caravan Scrub-Down (Don’t Forget the Roof!)
If your van came along for the ride, it deserves just as much love as your tow rig.
- Thoroughly wash the exterior, including solar panels, awnings, windows, and hatches.
- Flush the chassis and running gear, especially around suspension and brakes.
- Inspect your seals – Sand can get into doors, windows, and hatch rubbers. Clean and re-lubricate with silicone spray or protectant.
- Don’t forget the roof – It catches heaps of salt spray and needs just as much attention.
- Flush the grey water tank and water system if you’ve been using them near saltwater environments.
5. Electrical & UHF: Salt Air’s Sneaky Business
Salt air can oxidise electrical connections fast.
- Open up your UHF handset and external ports – Clean them with a soft brush and inspect for corrosion.
- Check Anderson plugs, solar inputs, and light bars for grime or rust.
- Use dielectric grease on exposed electrical plugs for added protection before your next trip.

6. Camp Gear & Canvas: Dry It or Die Trying
You know the smell - musty canvas, mouldy towels, and sand-infused swag nightmares. Avoid it by doing this:
- Set up tents, awnings, and camp chairs at home to air and dry completely.
- Shake out sand from zippers, seams, and frames.
- Check poles and pegs for rust.
- Wash all linens, towels, and clothing immediately to remove salt and prevent staining.
Bonus Tip: Give your esky or portable fridge a good wipeout and deodorise it with bicarb soda to avoid any “what died in here?” moments next trip.

7. Log It All
Take the time to jot down anything that needs replacing, repairing, or upgrading. Maintenance isn’t just about cleaning - it’s about keeping your setup in top shape and ready for the next adventure.
- Was your suspension sagging?
- Did the fridge chew more power than expected?
- Was your UHF signal weak?
- Did your recovery gear perform or leave you stuck?
It’s better to catch these issues now than halfway through your next remote getaway.
