It gets a bit tiring to keep when folk like us banging on about safety when you’re travelling remotely. But now and again, you’ll see why it’s so important.
On the very remote Gunbarrel Highway, one man came off his motorcycle and did some damage to himself. He was travelling with a group other riders, so was effectively immobile. Warburton, a tiny community, was over 200 kilometres away. If these guys didn’t have some emergency communications, they would have been in a real pickle.
But, they did. They activated an emergency beacon, and thing quickly swung into action. An RAC Search and Rescue aeroplane found them, and dropped off water, food and a satellite phone. Later, Warburton Police and medical staff formed a rescue party and came out to fetch the stricken rider.
It doesn’t matter these guys were riding bikes, the moral of the story is the same. Shit happens, and sometimes it happens to you. If you’re travelling remotely, have some basic first aid and some form of emergency communications handy. No questions.
